Prof. Dr. Y. Sabit Agaoglu
Our founder, Prof. Dr. Y. Sabit Ağaoğlu, dedicated 45 years to viticulture and winemaking at Ankara University’s Faculty of Agriculture, making significant contributions to Turkey’s domestic wine industry. Throughout his academic career, he focused on preserving the genetic heritage of grape varieties, developing modern viticultural techniques, and supporting local producers. He holds a crucial place in viticultural history as the person who, through clone selection, revived the Kalecik Karası grape from just a few cuttings after the phylloxera insect nearly wiped it out in the late 1960s.
The revival of Kalecik Karası was not merely about saving a grape—it was about reclaiming a precious legacy for Turkey’s wine culture. His work gave momentum to Turkey’s domestic winemaking industry, bringing Kalecik Karası into global recognition.
Today, Tomurcukbağ continues to honor and sustain the legacy he built with knowledge, dedication, and passion.
